How to Weld Weathering (CORTEN) Steel WELDING

Welding weathering steel is relatively simple. It welds very similar to some of the common low carbon steels such as ASTM A36 and ASTM A572. ASTM A588 weathering steel is a structural steel covered under the AWS D1.1. Structural Welding Code. It is a group II steel which means prequalified welding procedures may be used.

Welding wire for Corten, Patinax Certilas

Welding wire for Corten, Patinax. Weather resistant steel usually contains 0,5% copper that creates a layer on the surface that prevents further oxidation witch makes it weather resistant. Corten welding wire also contains this addition of copper to offer the same properties for the weld seam and increases also slightly the mechanical values. Corten or Patinax welding wire is available as solid wire under the name SG Corten

What is Corten Weathering Steel?

You can weld weathering steel using the same flux combinations so that the tensile strength of the deposited weld metal (welding rod or wire) is consistent with the tensile strength of the base metal (weathering steel). Typical tensile strength of based metal (weathering steel) is 68-78 KSI. We would advise only welding A606-4 or A588 together.

Core Ten (A242 & A588) steels are weathering steels commonly used for outdoor structures. These steels have a higher resistance to atmospheric corrosion than typical mild steels. Often, welds on these steels are specified for similar corrosion resistance and color match. On single pass welds, mild steel electrodes are commonly used.

Jun 15, 2020 · As @cmalooski1 said it should cut just like regular steel, it has a small amount of copper in it but I wouldnt think it would be enough to require additional power to cut. Technically you are supposed to use a like welding wire/rod, however for most stuff 1/4" and under you can get away with regular wire as I think the theory is the weld will mix the alloys from the base metal with the weld corten a steel welding wire
